about

Jack and I had a special bond since we first met in 1994, courtesy of all people— The Bouncing Souls, who had for some reason, begun championing our obscure little band and its homemade cassette. We were both Sicilian kids from the suburbs with fake names and real dreams. We both saw music as a vehicle for myth making and storytelling. We were both also probably happy to be anyone other than who we'd been as kids. We played some amazing shows together, but I especially cherish the early ones at Brownies on Avenue A. We didn't have that much in common in other ways. I was a quasi shut-in, grad student and beach bum who lived more or less like a monk. Jack, well, did not. I chose to reinterpret this song, Jack's beloved anthem of bohemian indulgence for that very reason. To say "I loved you for who you were, even if I couldn't always relate to the things you did." And also to say "Thank you for loving me for who I was, and for never making me feel like I should be anything else."

One of the last times we hung out was when we went to the Bowie exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum. I remember looking at one of David's ensembles from the 'Young Americans' period in a glass display case and thinking how good it would look on Jack. But what I most remember is the two of us standing side my side, feet tapping in tandem, singing along under our breaths to a wall sized projection of Ziggy & The Spiders doing 'Rock 'N Roll Suicide.'

Afterwards we had drinks at a little cocktail bar down the avenue. I was bending his ear off about having my heart broken again by a woman who had made quite a habit of it. And I just remember him putting his hand on my shoulder and looking at me with these kind eyes as if to say "You're Michael Grace Jr, and you are worth ten of them, and there is work to do!"

I'm not sure that's true Jack— but since you've been gone— I try to remember it nonetheless.
